The Black Soccer Academic - 1607


Walter Daniel John Tull was born in Folkestone in 1888 to English and Barbadian parents. He was scouted by Tottenham Hotspurs in 1909 and at 21 made his debut.
He started against Sunderland at Roker Park and became Tottenham Hotspurs first Black footballer. His home debut came 10 days later against Manchester United in front of 35,000.
He went onto make 10 appearances, score 2 goals and is a club legend. Legacy no. 170.


Christopher William Gerrard Hughton was born in London to Irish and Ghanaian parents. He joined Spurs as a schoolboy and was given his senior debut by Keith Burkinshaw aged 20.
He started against Manchester United in the League Cup on August 29th 1979 in a 2-1 win at White Hart Lane. He has since become a legendary figure at the club. He won two FA Cups (1981 and 1982) and the 1984 UEFA Cup.
He has managed the club on a caretaker basis on three occasions. Legacy No. 522.


Garth Anthony Crooks OBE was born in Stoke-on-Trent to Jamaican parents. He joined the Potters as a schoolboy and made his senior debut at the age of 18 in 1976.
He moved to Spurs in the summer of 1980 for £650,000, he made his debut on August 16th against Nottingham Forest at White Hart Lane. He started and scored the second goal in a 2-0 win.
He made 174 appearances and scored 70 goals between 1980 and 1985, winning silverware in the FA Cup (1981 and 1982) and the 1984 UEFA Cup. Legacy No. 527.

Patrick Avalon Corbett was born in Hackney and joined Tottenham Hotspur as an apprentice. The central defender signed professional forms with Spurs in October 1980 and at the age of 18 made his senior debut on October 31st 1981. Selected by Keith Burkinshaw, he replaced Garth Crooks against Southampton at The Dell and scored the matchwinner in a memorable 2-1 win. He went onto make 5 appearances between 1981 and 1983 before moving to Leyton Orient. Legacy no.534.
Daniel Joseph Thomas was born in Worksop to Jamaican parents. He joined Coventry City as a youth and made his senior debut at the age of 18.
In the summer of 1983 he was signed by Tottenham manager Keith Burkinshaw for £250,000. He made his debut on August 27th when starting against Ipswich Town at Portman Rd.
He made 116 appearances before his career was cut short through injury. Legacy No. 542.
John Chiedozie was born in Owerri Nigeria and came to England as young boy. He joined Leyton Orient as an apprentice in 1977.
The quick, goal scoring winger joined Tottenham from Notts County for £375,000 in 1984. He made his debut on August 25th against Everton at Goodison Park, where he scored in a 4-1 win.
Chiedozie made 75 appearances scoring 11 goals, before moving to Derby County in 1988. Legacy no.549.




Mitchell Anthony Thomas was born in Luton Bedfordshire to Jamaican parents. The full back made over 100 appearances for the Hatters.
He then followed manager David Pleat to White Hart Lane for a fee of £275,000. He made his Spurs debut against Aston Villa on August 23rd 1986.
He went onto make 54 appearances in a campaign that ended with a third place finish in Division One. He clocked up over 150 appearances. Legacy no.555.

Courtney Huw Fairclough was born in Nottingham and joined his hometown club Nottingham Forest. Brian Clough gave him his senior debut in the League Cup in 1981 and he made 134 appearances before joining Spurs for £387,000.
He made his Tottenham debut against Coventry City at Highfield Rd on August 15th 1987. A trustworthy central defender, he made 70 between 1987 and 1989 before moving to Leeds United. Legacy no. 567.


Brian Statham was born in Harare Zimbabwe but grew up in Essex. He was a right back and he came through the Spurs youth system as an apprentice. Terry Venables gave him his senior debut on December 26th 1987.
He replaced Vinny Samways against Southampton at The Dell and went onto make 27 appearances between 1987 and 1992. During his time at White Hart Lane he spent time on-loan with Reading and Bournemouth, before leaving in 1992 to join Brentford. Legacy no. 569.


Andrew Arthur Gray was born in London to Jamaican parents. His career started in non-league football with Corinthians Casuals and Dulwich Hamlet before he turned professional.
His move to Tottenham came in the Spring of 1992 following a £900,000 transfer. The midfielder started at White Hart Lane against Leeds United on March 7th 1992.
He made 33 appearances between 1992 and 1994. Legacy no. 593.


Jeffrey Simon Thompson Minton was born in Hackney London and joined the Tottenham academy as a 10 year old. He turned professional with Spurs and made his debut on April 25th 1992.
Given his senior debut by Peter Shreeves, he started and scored Spurs second goal in a 3-3 at White Hart Lane. He made another two appearances before leaving in 1994 as a 20 year old and signed for Brighton. He made 3 appearances. Legacy no. 595
