EDUCATOR. HISTORIAN. CONSULTANT.
"If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." Desmond Tutu
I was inspired to start my research after experiencing racism personally, and seeing the harm it does in society.
I'm a senior lecturer with over 15 years experience in curriculum design, and validating business degrees in higher education.
Following a career ending injury as a footballer, I worked as a business manager in the public and private sectors. As an educator, I integrate my business management experiences into the student learning experience.
I teach management and sociology in sport. In 2014 I opened the UCFB Wembley academic campus with 8 new sports degrees, as the University Dean.
I'm a research partner for the UK's leading Anti-Racism Educational Charity 'Show Racism the Red Card', and have created the content for their 'First11 Black Players exhibition'.
As well as writing articles, I research footballers with Black heritage to post about their accolades and achievements. I speak at conferences and guest on event panels, mainly on topics such as the business of football and discrimination within the football industry.

Who is The Black Soccer Academic?
Richard Flash is a former professional footballer who is now a university lecturer and researcher. As a young professional he lived and trained with David Beckham at Manchester United. His playing career ended with a fractured kneecap (or two).
Which footballers feature in your research?
Female and male footballers past and present with African and Caribbean heritage. Most of our posts and articles are based on Black players that have played in the top English divisions, or at international level.
Why do you only celebrate footballers with Black heritage?
Although Black people have lived in England for hundreds of years, we began to arrive 'en masse' into the UK over 75 years ago. Many were faced with different forms of racial discrimination and abuse. We celebrate the achievements of the players, in the face of racism that they have faced.
